Lead and Copper
The City of Hastings is committed to providing safe and reliable drinking water in full compliance with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy’s (EGLE) Lead and Copper Rule revisions. Our water system does not have lead in its water mains or wells. However, lead can enter drinking water when it is in contact with pipes, solder, interior plumbing, fittings, and fixtures that contain lead. The City treats the water according to a corrosion control program that uses orthophosphate to create a coating on the inside of pipes which prevents lead (if present) from leaching into drinking water. The City also routinely samples and tests for lead and copper and reports that information to EGLE. For more information on water quality in the City of Hastings, please view our annual water quality/consumer confidence report which can be found in the documents menu of our website.
The City of Hastings is replacing lead service lines and service lines previously connected to lead. We are continuing our service line investigation to determine the service line materials through excavation and in-home inspections. This information is used to create a distribution system materials inventory (DSMI) which is used to plan service line replacements. If you are interested in having an in-home service line inspection, you can reach out to the City of Hastings at 269-945-2468 ext. 3 to set up an appointment. We would only need access to your meter and service line entering the home.
